Reginald Gregg was born in Salford, Lancashire, on 20 May 1880 and served with the 3rd Volunteer Service Company, Manchester Regiment, in South Africa during the Boer War.

Commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Manchester Regiment (Territorial Force) on 25 October 1916. Posted to the 1/5th Battalion, where one of his brother officers was the poet Wilfred Owen, he served during the Great War on the Western Front from late 1916, and was wounded in April 1917.

Attached to the 6th Battalion, he was killed in action by a machine gun bullet on 1 October 1918, a fact reported by Owen in his letter of 19 October 1918:

‘Lieutenant Gregg died of wounds. I had known him in Scarborough. He had been very fond of his wife, and proud of his little daughter.’ (Letters of Wilfred Owen, Letter 668 refers).

Gregg is buried in Uplands Cemetery, Magny-la-Fosse, France.
