James Archibald Jackson was born on June 26th 1922  the eldest son to Mr and Mrs Jackson, Leafield, Edinburgh Road. He was talented in athletics being a skilled footballer and swimmer. James was full of the spirit of enterprise and adventure, upon leaving school he joined the Merchant Navy.

When war broke out however, he felt drawn to the Air Force, and joined the R.A.F at the age of 18. After the usual period of home service he went to South Africa where he completed his training. He fulfilled his service for 3 years unscathed and gained the rank of Pilot Officer, but was eventually killed on July 8th, 1943 in an air crash in Hants.

He now lies in Biggar Kirkyard. One of the last memories left is of his tall, upstanding figure at the saluting base in the Wings for Victory Week at Biggar in May, 1943.
