So near yet so Far

Charles Ford was my Mother's Youngest Brother.

He first served with the 4th Dorsets landing in Normandy on D Plus 5. He took part in the Bitter fighting for Hill 112. He was wounded in both legs by Shell Fragments and evacuated to Rhyl in the UK.

After recovering,he was then posted to 5th Dorsets. On 29.04.1945 Charlie and his section were aboard Kangaroo APCs and were approaching the Village of Tarmsted. The Enemy had placed a concealed Seal Mine beneath the Road, As Charlie's carrier passed over the Mine it detonated, killing all 19 men onboard.

The resulting explosion hurled the Carrier 500 yards into a field The Crater left by the Explosion was so large the the Engineers had to build a bailey bridge over it.
