George Chapman was born on 27 March 1920 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. Before enlisting into the Army on 30 May 1940, he worked as a letter press mender.

Pte Chapman embarked for Normandy on 27 June 1944 and on 20 July 1944 was posted to 1st Battalion The Herefordshire Regiment. On 30 July 1944 the battalion attacked as part of Operation Bluecoat. Pte Chapman was killed that day near Caumont-sur-Aure. He was 24 years old.

Listed as missing, George was commemorated on the Bayeux Memorial until his final resting place was identified at the CWGC St. Charles de Percy War Cemetery, Normandy. His grave was rededicated in a ceremony with full military honours on 29 September 2026.

His grave is now marked with a newly-inscribed headstone bearing his name and will be cared for in perpetuity.
