Private Charles Winford Hicks

Winford Charles Hicks was born on June 24, 1894 in Midgic, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, Canada. He was one of 8 children of Charles Hicks and Melissa Jane Gough.

Winford enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in August 1916 and joined the 171 Battalion as a Private. At the time he enlisted, Winford worked as a carpenter and was unmarried, although his niece, Rhoda Hicks Phinney recalled that he had a "sweetheart" and they planned to marry after the war.

While fighting overseas, Winford maintained close contact with his sister Annie Hicks (married to Aubry Hicks) of Midgic.

In April 1917, Winford was transferred to the 13th Battalion Canadian Infantry, and based on family oral history is believed to have fought at Vimy Ridge.

Winford was killed in action in an early morning attack on September 2, 1918 near Arras, France. He was buried in the Dominion British Cemetery in Cagnicourt, France.
